RUR World University Ranking 2018 is out now. This year 783 universities from 74 countries took part in the ranking. Since the first release of the ranking in 2010 more than 1000 higher education institutions representing 84 nations participated in Round University Ranking.


RUR Ranking evaluates the performance of higher education institutions by 20 separate indicators grouped into four key areas of university performance: Teaching, Research, International Diversity, and Financial Sustainability.


The list of TOP-10 countries by the number of participated institutions is:


1. USA – 135
2. Russia – 70
3. UK – 67
4. China (Mainland) – 51
5. Japan – 38
6. Taiwan – 35
7. Australia – 27
8. Germany – 25
9. Italy – 22
10. Spain – 21


USA is still #1 in a world in terms of both number of participated institutions and TOP-positions in RUR Diamond (#1-100) and Golden (#101-200) Leagues. At the same time US has 4 less universities compared with 2017 ranking edition and 6 less compared with 2016.


Russia took 2nd place in a world in terms of overall representations with 70 institutions. Last year Russia had 67 universities and 3rd place in a world. However, the majority Russian universities are still out of TOP-500. In total, 60 Russian institutions out of 70 are in the so-called Global League (represents Universities outside the 5th hundred).


UK has changed positions from Russia and now occupies the 3rd place in the world in terms of representation with 67 participating universities.


China Mainland is 2nd country in RUR 2018 in terms of participants’ dynamics. This year China has 51 universities compared with 41 in 2017.


It is worth to mention that Greater China (China Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao) has 92 universities. In fact, it makes Greater China 2nd after the US in terms of participated HEI.


World TOP-20 in RUR 2018


Worlds’ TOP-10 stays almost the same compared with previous ranking releases.


Harvard University is #1 for the 2nd year. University of Chicago rose 1 position up, from 3rd to 2nd place. Caltech, the small research-intensive university from US western shore is #3 for the first time (#2 in 2017). Imperial College, Stanford and MIT have kept their positions as 4th, 5th and 6th respectively. Columbia University took 7th position compared with 8th in 2018. Northeastern University from the US has demonstrated the most outstanding result jumping from 19th to 9th place. University of Cambridge closes the world TOP. University of Oxford is out of TOP-10 this year for the first time. It has dropped from 7th to 12th position this year.


In total among world top-20 universities 12 are US colleges, 4 from UK and 4 are non US/UK universities.
