Overview

The University of Pavia is one of the oldest universities in Europe. An edict issued by King Lotharius quotes a higher education institution in Pavia as already established in 825; the Studium generale was officially established by Emperor Charles IV in 1361. Alessandro Volta (1745-1827) is only one of a large group of famous professors who taught at the University of Pavia, together with Girolamo Cardano (1501-1576), Antonio Scarpa (1752-1832) and Camillo Golgi (1843-1926) Nobel prize in Medicine in 1906. Today Pavia is a Research University, offering a wide variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary teaching in Economics, Pharmacy, Law, Engineering, Literature & Philosophy, Medicine & Surgery, Science (Mathematics, Physics Chemistry, Biology and Natural Science), Political Science and Musicology. The University offers Degree and Master Courses, Doctorates, Post-graduate Schools, Specialization Courses. Research is carried out in departments, institutes, clinics, centres, and laboratories in close association with public and private institutions, enterprises and companies. The University of Pavia enjoys a strong tradition of international student and teacher exchanges: bilateral agreements involve, among others, the historical universities of Coimbra, and many universities in Europe, the Middle East, the Mediterranean area, the United States of America, China, Japan and many other countries.

Mission Statement

A Historical University of centuries-old traditions, the oldest University in Lombardy and one of the oldest in Europe, member of the Coimbra group ever since its foundation; the University of Pavia looks unwaveringly to the future and views itself as a public institution, inclined towards teaching and research carried out within a national and international context. The results of the university`s research and the skills of its graduates are therefore applicable to both national and international contexts. The University`s primary aims are: The advancement and arrangement of scientific research and higher education; The elaboration and conveyance of scientific knowledge; The education of professors and the cultural and professional training of students; The cultural, scientific and technological advancement of society. In view of the aforementioned institutional aims and the university`s ancient european and international vocation, The University promotes and implements collaboration with national and international universities, public and private bodies and scientific and cultural centres, in order to accomplish objectives that contribute to the cultural, scientific, economic and technological development of the country. The university has traditionally maintained that the living experience of its students and professors is an essential part of the educational and formative process. The university recognises the university colleges, both public and private, as playing a fundamental role in this process. The mission of the University of Pavia is to pursue its own objectives with an awareness that the use of knowledge for the fulfilment of appropriate aims, required more and more by contemporary society, is complementary to the fundamental processes of the creation and diffusion of knowledge.
