Overview

Osaka City University (OCU), the largest municipal university in Japan, is composed of eight faculties and ten graduate schools (Business, Economics, Law, Literature and Human Sciences, Science, Engineering, Medicine/Medical, Human Life Science, Creative Cities, Nursing,). OCU has about 9,000 students and 2,000 staff members, who study and work with enthusiasm under the university's motto 'Creativity, Friendliness and Flexibility.' It is OCU's aim to meet the needs of society and to continue as an urban-oriented institution that strives to study possible solutions to the contemporary challenges facing urban areas, as well as ways to enable the sound development of cities.

Mission Statement

Osaka City University traces its beginnings to the 1880 founding of Osaka Commercial Training Institute, the center of commercial and industrial study in Osaka. In 1949, in establishing Osaka City University as Japans first municipal university, Dr. Hajime Seki, mayor of Osaka, set forth a distinctive vision. The new university should not be just an institute for professional training nor an imitation of the national universities; rather, it should serve the needs of the citizens, conduct original research on the culture, economy, and society of Osaka City, and, finally, communicate the results to the people of the city. Throughout its history, Osaka City University has faithfully adhered to this founding vision, and urban studies have always been among its main concerns. In April 2006, Osaka City University was administratively reorganized as a public university corporation.
