Overview

The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro `UFRJ` was founded in 1920 under the name of University of Brazil. UFRJ is a public and tuition-free university recognized by the high quality of teaching as well as by its commitment to research. The institution is dispersed around the city of Rio de Janeiro in several locations. The main campus is located at Cidade Universitiria, an island with 5,238,337 m2, where the Centers for Health Sciences, Technology and Engineering, Natural Sciences and Math, Letters and Arts area located. Social Sciences, the Faculty of Law, the School of Music and Humanities are situated in historical buildings at Praia Vermelha (100,976 m2) and at downtown areas. The National Museum of Quinta da Boa Vista (53,276 m2) also belongs to UFRJ and its building is an alive testimony of the history of Brazil. UFRJ has eight Hospitals covering all medical areas. More recently, two new campi out of the city of Rio de Janeiro were created, namely, Macae and Xerem, with the purpose to bring high quality education to the interior of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Moreover, the Science Park of Rio de Janeiro is located in Cidade Universit?ria, which stimulates a closer exchange of knowledge between students, professors and enterprises.

Mission Statement

The UFRJ strongly believes in the creation of an intercultural environment not only as a way to foster academic links, but also to strengthen the friendship among peoples by encouraging the sense of respect for otherness. Following this path, the institution maintains Copperative relations with more than 170 international institutions worldwide. All these features consolidate the active role of the UFRJ in the development of science, technology and innovation as well as ratify the institution`s commitment to a conception of a pluralist, modern and democratic university. Currently, the UFRJ offers 175 undergraduate courses, 92 master programs, 15 professional master programs, 84 doctoral programs, 120 extension projects and 315 sensu lato graduate courses. Approximately 31% of our graduate programs are levels 6 and 7, the highest in the national evaluation undertaken by CAPES. UFRJ has a student body of 41,563 undergraduate students, 5,992 master`s students, 5,520 doctoral students, 5.281 e-learning students; a staff of 4,122 faculties and researchers, and 9,350 technical-administrative employees.
